Service: Usability Review

See also: What is Usability?

In a usability review, sometimes referred to as an "expert review" or "heuristic evaluation", I perform a comprehensive review of the usability of your website, including:

  • Common design mistakes and how to fix them.
  • Adherence to design heuristics, both standard and site/business-specific.
  • Consistency of user experience and interaction design.
  • Consistency of the business's vision throughout the site.
  • Scenario/task-based analysis.
  • Clarity of task flow (i.e. where's the 'banana'?)
  • Error-proofing (a.k.a. poke-yoke).
  • A written report of my findings.
  • The report includes recommendations for both short-term fixes and how to address issues over a longer term.

Return on Investment

Let's say you're a small business, and you perform a $2000 review subsidized over a year. Based on the average ROI of a usability redesign, you will break even if your current sales are at least $91 per month. Basically, if you are at all profitable then a usability review is worth it!

Now what if you're a tech startup making $20,000/month in revenue? A $5000 review would on average increase your revenue by $16,183/mo! A review for a tech startup would be more demanding and should be repeated more often, say $5000 per quarter, but on average your sales revenue would jump to $36,600/month. You can check my math, if you like.

How It Works

  1. I do a quick scan of your website, recording my initial impressions and identifying major problems with the site. This step is also available as a separate service.
  2. We discuss (in person or over the phone) your Web strategy. This is done after the website scan so that I become aware of any discrepencies between what you are trying to achieve and what your website is actually communicating.
  3. I perform a task-based analysis.
  4. I compile and priorite issues with your website.
  5. I write up and send you a formal usability report.
  6. We meet to discuss the report and how you can proceed to improve your website.

A Cheaper Alternative

If you're still tentative about investing in a complete site review, I provide a cheaper alternative: usability scans.

Cost:  $1000 - $6000, depending on scope of site
